The City Rescue Mission of Lansing was founded in 1911. As the largest shelter in Michigan's capital area, we provide shelter to about 140 women, children, and men every night and serve nearly 100,000 meals every year. We are a Christian ministry which exists for the sole purpose of meeting physical and spiritual needs in our community!

1930 - Meals

In early 1930, the Doltons realized that the men flooding into the capital area needed food. This influx was due to what would become the Great Depression. They began feeding on a regualr basis to meet this obvious need.

1948 - Permanent Home

In 1948, under the direction of John Beck, the Mission became incorporated as a non-profit. He created the board of directors and oversaw the purchase of the first "permanent home" at 611 E. Michigan Avenue, our current chapel on Michigan Avenue.

1957 - Shelter

Prior to 1957, the Mission had sheltered on an as-needed basis. With growing numbers of homelessness, the men's shelter opened its first official "dorm" in 1957. John Beck was unable to see the accomplishment of his planning, as he had passed away unexpectedly.

Renovations - Cross

2005 - Renovations

By 2005, the Mission had grown to four buildings on Michigan Avenue. These buildings were in great need of renovation, which took place in 2005. The "Jesus Saves" cross, which had hung over the street since 1948, remained after the building renovation.
